January 23rd, 2024 Watershed Conditions Statement Issued
Watershed Conditions Statement: Flood Outlook across the Saugeen Watershed from Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024 to Sunday, January 28th, 2024
Saugeen Conservation advises that forecasted precipitation, above freezing temperatures, and associated
snowmelt are likely to result in above seasonal water levels throughout the watershed over the next
several days.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing over the next several days and will be accompanied by
20 to 25 mm of rain between Wednesday, January 24th and Thursday, January 25th. As of January 22nd,
the average water content contained within the snowpack was 45 mm. Melting snow in combination
with forecasted precipitation may result in 65 to 70 mm of runoff. In some areas of the watershed,
rainfall may be absorbed in the snowpack, however, sustained warm temperatures and primarily frozen
soils will cause the melting snow to run-off quickly to local watercourses.
An increase in water levels will also create the potential for break-up and movement of river ice. This
could result in ice jams and flooding in non-traditional areas. Ice jams can occur anywhere within a
watercourse but are more likely in areas near culverts, bridges, and channel restrictions.
While significant flooding is not expected, watercourses could reach or exceed bank-full conditions, with
minor flooding in low-lying areas. More extensive flooding is possible should the watershed receive
temperatures and rainfall amounts greater than what is currently forecast.
The public is reminded to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts, and
dams. High water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along watercourse banks are
extremely dangerous. Any remaining ice on our watercourses, during or following this event, will be
unsafe to be on. Municipal and County staff should monitor areas that are traditionally prone to flooding.
Saugeen Conservation staff will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide an update if
conditions change.
This message will remain in effect until Sunday, January 28th, 2023.
