Watershed Conditions Statement: Flood Outlook Main Saugeen River and Tributaries in the Municipality of West Grey
Friday, January 3rd, 2025 to Monday, January 20th, 2025
Saugeen Conservation advises that the Watershed Conditions Statement for Water Safety covering the entire Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority watershed expires today, January 3, 2025, at 4:30 PM.
A new Flood Outlook Statement is now in effect for the Municipality of West Grey, valid through
Monday, January 20th, 2025.
MUNICIPALITY OF WEST GREY –
This statement has been issued due to the potential for frazil ice formation in the Main Saugeen River and its tributaries, driven by an extended forecast of cold temperatures and turbulent river flows caused by recent rainfall and snowmelt.
Key forecast details:
- Cold air temperatures will persist for the next 14 days, with daytime highs below -10°C and nighttime lows ranging from -13°C to -22°C. Exposure of the water to cold air temperatures can trigger the formation of frazil ice.
- High, fast-moving flows from Priceville to Durham currently lack ice cover, increasing the risk of frazil ice formation, which can rapidly obstruct water flow and cause flooding upstream of ice jams.
SVCA and Municipality of West Grey staff are working together to prioritize public safety, with SVCA actively communicating flood forecasting information to municipal staff. As part of these efforts, municipal staff are encouraged to remain prepared to respond should conditions require action.
Saugeen Conservation staff will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed. This statement remains in effect until January 20, 2025 at 4:30pm unless otherwise updated.
