FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 23rd, 2023
Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority announces the Varney Conservation Area Swimming Pond in West Grey will be closed until further notice
SAUGEEN WATERSHED, ONTARIO – Bruce, Dufferin, Huron, Grey, and Wellington Counties.
Varney Conservation Area’s swimming pond has served as a picturesque backdrop for generations of families, residents, and visitors. We fully acknowledge the historical significance and emotional attachment many have to this location.
"We understand that this swimming pond has been a beloved part of our community, serving as a place of joy and recreation for generations. The decision to close the pond was not made lightly. SVCA has decided to prioritize public safety and environmental protection."
- Jennifer Stephens, General Manager
Our primary responsibility at SVCA is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public who visit our properties. Based on a comprehensive review regarding the pond's safety and functionality, and the health of the tributary of Camp Creek, which historically fed the swimming pond, in the interest of environmental stewardship and public safety, we are acting accordingly.
While the pond has largely provided a space of joy and recreation, it also carries a somber history. These historical events, while distant, remind us of the inherent risks associated with water bodies and the importance of continually reassessing safety measures. The decision to close the pond is a proactive step towards minimizing potential risks. It is a decision rooted in safety, care, and respect for our community and the environment.
SVCA thanks the public for its understanding. We appreciate your support and hope you continue to enjoy the natural beauty of our thousands of acres of conservation lands.
